We are all Islands

Yes, yes, we’ll get to the new, experimental, off-the-wall stuff that the kids are listening to in good time. But after explaining I was seeing Okkervil River to most of the people I spoke to yesterday only to be met with bemused looks and furrowed brows, I’ve decided to cover a few more obvious bands - consider these entries like those catch-up classes you reluctantly sit through at the end of the semester, only to realize they’re actually pretty useful because it turns out you knew nothing all along …

Islands

Born from the ashes of The Unicorns, Islands effectively continue where they left off - expect more of the same screeching, screaming and tortured electronics - rough around the edges and yet surprisingly twee. You can catch up with them in the Speakeasy Bar, Queen’s Students Union on the 19th of February for the beggarly (*cringe*) fee of £9.

Heading down to Dublin tonight to see them at Whelan’s. I’ll let you know how the new songs sound.

Great gig last night, though Nick seemed in pretty bad form! Think he had a run-in with someone before the show and he was pretty subdued on stage.

Played a number of new tracks including the opener “Verigo” which was about 10 minutes long! Followed it with “The Arm”, “Pieces Of You” and “I Feel Evil Creeping In”. There was a few other new songs that I didn’t know the titles to.

From the first album - “Volcanoes”, “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby”, “Humans” and “Swans” (as part of the encore).

They also played a song by an Irish singer but I’ll not say the title in case they decide to play it again tonight!

Hope they don’t play the same setlist as I’m going again tonight!

They sounded great again in Belfast but they really don’t play very long! Calls of ’short set’ being shouted from the crowd! Think it might have had something to do with Alex being as rough as a badger’s arse! Spoke to him before the show and he really wasn’t holding up too well at all! The set was more or less the same as Dublin though they opened with “the Arm” and finished with “Vertigo”. They did “Where There’s A Will, There’s A Whalebone” without the rapping, which sounded a bit strange! They also did “Red Football”, the Sinéad O’Connor cover in the encore, just like Dublin.

Was chatting to Nick after the show (no, I’m not stalking the band!)! He said he was feeling a bit low at the moment, but came across as a really nice guy!

Hopefully, be heading to Tegan & Sara on Thursday. Tickets bought for Dinosaur Jr, the Hold Steady (rawk!) and Gravenhurst, so a few good months ahead!
