Gig Watch – Okkervil River

I try not to build expectation levels up before gigs, having been poorly disappointed by shows in the past (Thanks Ryan Adams!) but I can’t help getting excited about Okkervil River coming to Belfast.

Ok riv

They’ve been around for the good part of a decade now but only really made their mark with 2005’s Black Sheep Boy, an album that transformed them from middle of the road indie ballad boys to the next Buffalo Springfield, The Band, Flying Burrito Brothers… Songs like For Real and In A Radio Song are pretty heavy affairs, dealing with loss, sorrow, sadness…

So last year’s offering The Stage Names comes to some as a bit of an escape. Lead singer Will Sheff deals with being a rock star on this release, and seems to take a step back from everything. You Can’t Hold Hands With A Rock And Roll Man is about being too old, too hung-over, too tired and too bored to tour and its worlds away from anything on Black Sheep Boy. Half of this album was written at 2006’s South By Southwest Music Festival which might go some way to explaining the theme, or maybe it’s just middle age…

So, Okkervil River are tired of touring, singing about being tired of touring and playing in the Empire in a few days… have I sold it to you yet?

Great to see a Belfast-based blog! And more interestingly concentrating on decent indie bands (Westlife’s residency at the Odyssey is getting a bit tired!).

Saw Okkervil River at McHugh’s a few years ago and they really were worth the hype! An energetic, intimate gig - one of the best I’ve seen in a few years. If you don’t know already, maybe check out Shearwater (Keyboardist’s Jonathan Meiburg’s group).

Finally, Islands are coming to the Speakeasy bar and are definitely worth checking out!

Excellent show! Thought the crowd was bit subdued though. Didn’t people used to dance at gigs in the old days? Maybe I’m showing my age! For those who are interested the setlist was:

1. The President’s Dead, 2. Black, 3. A Hand To Take Hold At The Scene, 4. Latest Toughs, 5. A Girl In Port, 6. The War Criminal Rises and Speaks, 7. Plus Ones, 8. Okkervil River Song, 9. So Come Back, I Am Waiting, 10. Unless It’s Kicks, 11. Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe, 12. For Real, 13. John Allyn Smith Sails, 14. Black Sheep Boy. Encore: 15. Red, 16. Westfall.

Might have the order messed up a bit and they might have played another song in the encore but I was slightly inebriated at that point! J

thanks for the tracklist. I was never a big fan of the song Black Sheep Boy, but that version they did was cracker.

I love the first photo in that set.
